Marriage License Information

STATE OF IDAHO

Each county in Idaho has a simple application process for your marriage license.  Some can even be filled out online ahead of time.  Check with that specific county to see if you need an appointment and where to get the application.


Here are some details that pertain to all Idaho counties.

  • Couple should go to county office together with valid identification.
  • Be sure you have the appropriate form of payment and amount for that office.
    • Some counties will let you prepay for certified copies of your completed license.
    • Some counties will mail your certified copy once they receive the original signed license and have processed it.
  • You are not required to have any witnesses sign your license.
  • There are no waiting periods to get married once receiving your license.
  • Your license doesn't expire; however, you are encouraged to get married within a year of receiving it.
  • You are not required to be an Idaho resident, nor is your officiant.
  • You can get married anywhere in Idaho as long as you have a marriage license from any Idaho county.

STATE OF WASHINGTON

In every Washington county, each person getting married will need to complete their own application, have it notarized and then hand delivered to the county office or mailed in.  If you are mailing in your application, be sure to send payment in the correct form.  Check with that specific county to see if you need an appointment, where to get the application and for additional information.  Some counties can take up to three weeks or longer to send you your marriage license back if you originally mailed in your applications.


Here are some details that pertain to all Washington counties.

  • Be sure you have the appropriate form of payment and amount for that office.
    • Some counties will let you prepay for certified copies of your completed license, while others require to you pay later.  Check with the county regarding their process for providing you with a certified copy.
  • You are required to have two witnesses sign your license.  Your officiant cannot also sign as a witness.
  • There is a three day waiting period to get married once your license has been issued.
  • Your license will expire after 60 days once your waiting period is over.  You need to get married within this 60 day period.
  • You are not required to be a Washington resident, nor is your officiant.
  • You can get married anywhere in Washington as long as you have a marriage license from any Washington county.

NON-US RESIDENTS

Non-US residents are able to get a marriage license, as long as they have the following:

  • A letter from the Social Security Administration confirming they do not have a US social security number.
  • A valid form of identification from their country.
